It's been ten years since I won the World Whitewater Kayaking Championships and decided to write and publish my first book. To my great surprise, The Playboater's Handbook took off in popularity and set the course for an instructional series of books and videos that went on to win numerous awards. Looking back, it's now obvious to me why these products have been so popular - they share my passion for kayaking.
The model for success has been quite simple: aim high. Although the projects could have been shot entirely on our local river, I took world-class photographers and videographers on paddling trips around the world to capture the bulk of the footage for the books or DVDs. Our whitewater instructional series was shot internationally and features the spectacular scenery of Africa, Chile, Argentina, Ecuador, Peru, Mexico and New Zealand.
By going that extra mile I created an instructional series that educated and entertained at the same time. I had discovered how to publish with impact. Although we now produce much more than kayaking books and DVDs, publishing with impact continues to guide The Heliconia Press and differentiate us from the competition.
